My Little Soldier

There are a lot of Iraqi workers who are upgrading some buildings near our place. They stay in these trailers and we see them all the time. Nice guys, but they are constantly asking for bottles of water, candy, and gatorade. We give it to them sometimes, but try not to do to often. They have this young kid who probably is about 14 or 15 that stays and works with them. He name is Mohammed. I sorta like him, even though he does not speak any English. The other day he came up to me and saluted me. So I taught him the position of attention and the position of at ease. Now when I see him I just say "Mohammed, Attention". He snaps to it. Then when I say, "At ease," he does it as well. Really funny stuff. I will get a picture with him in the next couple of days.

Tomorrow is April Fools, and I have no jokes planned. That stinks, because as you know, I am a joker and April Fools is one of my favorite days. I thought of a couple of things, but I probably should not do them here.

Did I mention I have my own room now. Probably will only have it for a month, then they will move us to somewhere else on Taji. I have hung a lot of Caelan's drawings, pictures of the boys and Isabel, and hung up some of my Army equipment. It looks a lot different from the picture I posted a while back. I need some help from those of you who love me (I think that is everybody who reads this?). I want to add some posters on the walls. If anybody wants to sent them to me, I would like anything that is GA Bulldawg Football, Dale Jr (NASCAR), a Gibson or Fender Strat guitar, and maybe a poster of Ric Flair (16 times World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion). If anybody can swing it, I would be grateful. Until I blog again, I remain,

Today Turns Out Great

I only have a minute, because I have to go to a meeting. Today was my second day of two days of duty. That means two days of 12 hours shifts tracking the stuff that is going on. It turns out to be two very long days. When I got home a package was waiting for me from Isabel and the boys. I could not wait to open it. See here is what was inside: New underwear and for you guys out there you know nothing is better than a new pair of drawers. Next was some deodrant (my brand), gum, hand cleanser (need that),a shaving brush (to help clean my weapons), and lots of Pringles. But the best part was the cards from Isabel and the boys. To top it off was some pictures that Caelan has drawn for me. I love them and especially his version of my Humvee. Also Isabel put in the box some pictures of the boys. One was very big of Caelan. I cannot wait to come home tonight at 2200 and tape them on my wall. Thanks baby for making my day.

We Have Internet, But I Can't See My Blog

We finally got a connection in our hooch for Internet, but they have firewall on it. Here is the funny thing. I can type in www.blogger.com and create my blog, but when I try to go to randyhelms.blogspot.com to look at it, no dice. The proxiy kicks in and will not allow it. Oh well, I can still go to the MWR on the main side and look at it.

Nothing going on the last two days. I have duty Tuesday and Wensday of this week. The time for it is 0700 - 1900. So those two days I will be working my behind off tracking the battle. I completed my leave request and it will get submitted for signatures this week. Should start on 26 MAY, so I can be home for big Caelan's fouth birthday on 01 JUN.

Until next blog,

The Story Of The Fat Kid And The Insurance Man

TWO BLOGS IN ONE DAY – IT’S A FIRST

Well this is a blog entry I have been waiting to post. See today, March 25th is a special day. I know its Saturday and to some that may mean sleeping in. Well that is not why it’s special. Some may say, “Hey one more day and they race at Bristol!” well that is true, but that doesn’t make it special either. No today marks something totally separate. Let’s look back in the past.

The year was 1983 and a little fat kid was sitting in front of the television. Probably had a spoon in his hand and he was getting ready to dive into some Cool whip. Yes, Cool whip minus anything else. See the fat kid loved it. Well the fat kid’s momma went on a date with some Insurance salesman. Fat kid didn’t care, it just meant his sister would be watching him, and she would be busy with her own thing. Well the fat kid’s momma started dating this man more and more. Finally came the day the fat kid met the Insurance man. The insurance man dropped of a bunch of food at the fat kid’s house. Instantly the kid liked this stranger. He brought cookies, snack cakes, chips, and real sodas, like Coke and Pepsi, not those Winn Dixie imitations. Well the fat kid had no money, so the Insurance man told him he would pay him to mow his yard. Well the fat kid saw a guitar at the Insurance man’s house. He said “Hey man, would you teach me that?” The Insurance man was kind to show him a couple of chords. He even let the fat kid take the guitar home and practice.

Now summer came and it was 1984. The fat kid had to go visit someone in Florida. So when the Insurance man and the fat kids momma came to pick up him and his sister, they, the fat kid and his sister, noticed their momma was wearing a new ring on her left hand. The fat kid said, “You two got married, didn’t you?” His momma smiled from ear to ear and said, “Yes”. Well the fat kid did not care one way or another, but boy did his sister cry. She must have cried the whole way back to Georgia.

Now skip ahead to about 1986. The fat kid was not so fat anymore. See the Insurance man put up a basketball goal in the front yard. Now the fat kid’s friends could play after school. Friends like, Joe Mama, Headquarters, Allan or was it Michael Ballenger, Jessie whatever his last name is this week, Roderick and his brother, Tinker, and last but not least Bio Miller. So the fat kid lost weight, but all of a sudden he became cocky. See the Insurance man had some pretty strict rules and the fat kid didn’t want to play by them. He thought the Insurance man was just being mean to him. Rules like, make your bed, don’t lay on your bed during the day, every white man is up by 8:00 am, to include the summer, chores are a good thing and you don’t talk at the dinner table. So the fat kid made some stupid mistakes. Little mistakes like, steal a gun, try to grow some of the special hemp in the backyard, and the worst was drink to much and lock the Insurance man and his momma out of the house.

Well the Insurance man told the fat kid, “I am in the shipping business, not the receiving business. So when you graduate high school in 1987, you have a couple of choices. First is going to college and still stay at home. Second is get a job and you move out.” Well the fat kid said, “I’ll take the college thing”. Well the insurance man informed him he would have to pay for half of it. The fat kid thought to himself for a minute, “That means I will have to probably work full time and go to school part time. Man that is too much, forget that.” So the fat kid decided to skip college and go to work full time.
So when the fat kid graduated from high school he went to work for Bio’s dad. He made minimum wage and no health benefits. But alas the fat kid had it all figured out. See Bio’s dad was going to make him a partner someday and he and Bio would be rich. So he worked 40 plus hours a week at a whooping $3.35 an hour. Well Insurance man informed him after about two weeks, that fat kid owed him rent. The fat kid thought it was a joke. He was like, “What rent? I stay in the back bedroom like I have for years.” The insurance man said, “Well now you pay rent and board.” So almost half of his paycheck started going to Insurance man and his momma. Fat kid was mad and he started staying out late and partying with his buddies. Insurance man keeps telling the fat kid he would be moving out soon. Fat kid did not believe him. The fat kid switched jobs, and went to work for a distributing company. Better pay and better hours. One Thursday the fat kid drove home in his 1976 AMC Hornet and pulled up in his normal parking spot on the street. He walked inside all happy cause it was Thursday and Friday was pay day. Well Insurance man stopped him dead in his tracks. He said, “I found you a place to stay and you move in there starting tomorrow.” Fat kid was like, “Say what? Move, I don’t have first months rent and I can’t pay to get the utilities turned on.” Well Insurance man informed him that had all been taken care of. At time fat kid did not know, but he found out years latter that all the rent he had been paying went to help pay that first month rent and turn those utilities on.

So after work on Friday, fat kid started moving his stuff. He got his girlfriend to assist him. By Sunday afternoon he was finished and moved into his new place. He was thinking this might not be that bad. He would have his own place. He can sleep in on the weekend, have anybody he wanted over, and he didn’t even have to make his bed. Then a dose of reality hit fat kid on the head. His girlfriend, who at the time was engaged to him, said those four little words, “We need to talk”. She broke up with him. So here is fat kid in a puddle of tears, booted out of his house, and his woman had left him. So where does he go, well back to momma of course. Well Insurance man said, “Forget her and step up.” Well now fat kid was even madder then before at Insurance man, but in due time he did get over her.

Now fast forward to 1992, May to be exact. Fat kid has joined the Army and is in basic training at Ft Jackson, SC. He receives word that his first duty assignment will be South Korea. He thinks, “Wow that is far away.” (I won’t bore you with the little problem that fat kid was having at the time. I will just say Redheaded Witch and that should clue most of you in). October comes and fat kid finds himself in the “Land of the morning calm”. A lot of what he heard Insurance man talk about over the years is starting to sink in. See fat kid has never been that far away. So over the next five years of his Army career he notices more and more how much Insurance man loves him. See Insurance man told him not to make certain decisions in his life or they would have disastrous results. Most of the time fat kid would not listen. Now fat kid is getting older and he is seeing the Insurance man only wanted the best for him.

In 1997 Insurance man and his momma brought some friends with them and they visited fat kid in the Netherlands. One night after the friends had gone to bed, and fat kid’s momma had drifted off to slumber, Insurance man said something that fat kid will never forget. He told fat kid, “I’m proud of you.” And that my friends made fat kid happier then he had ever been up to that point in life. See a year prior to Insurance man and his momma visiting fat kid got drunk and received a DUI. Well fat kid stood up like a man and admitted his mistake to his commander right away. He even called Insurance man first to tell him of his mistake. So that night in Holland a year later made fat kid so happy and proud. Less then two weeks after they left to back to Georgia, fat kid found the best thing ever. He found his future wife. She stepped into his life and has been there for the last nine years.

Now let’s wrap this little story up. Insurance man and fat kid seem to get along great. So I will let the fat kid take it from here:

Sonny, I want to wish you a very happy birthday today. I love you more than anything on earth. You have made me who I am today and I owe you the world for it. What you have taught me I practice today with my two boys. I am proud to call you my dad and I love you more than you will ever know. Thank you and until we see each other again, God bless you and thanks for making Randahl James Helms a man.

Baghdad Baby

To All,

Here are some pictures of Baghdad. The big building use to be on of Sadam's Palaces. It is now the Headquarters for a Army unit. The swords are known as the Triumphal Arch. The following I got off the Internet to explain what it is:

To celebrate his "victory" over Iran, Saddam decided to build a Triumphal Arch. The concept of a triumphal arch is a European import, without precedent in the Middle East since Roman times. The colossal Hands of Victory monument has dominated Baghdad's skyline since the end of the Iran-Iraq war. Built in duplicate, it marks the entrances to a large new parade ground in central Baghdad, towering 140 feet above the highway. The triumphal arch is shaped as two pairs of crossed swords, made from the guns of dead Iraqi soldiers that were melted and recast as the 24-ton blades of the swords. Captured Iranian helmets are in a net held between the swords. And surrounding the base of the arms are another 5,000 Iranian helmets taken from the battle field. The fists that hold the swords aloft are replicas of Saddam Hussein's own hands. The German company that built the monument, H+H Metalform, said it was given a photograph of Saddam's own forearms to use as a model.

When Saddam inaugurated these triumphal arches, he rode under them on a white horse - an allusion to the steed of Hussein, the Shi'ite Muslim hero martyred at nearby Kerbala. The day before the first bombing run on Bhagdad during the 1991 Gulf War, Iraqi TV showed a mass of Iraqi soldiers marching beneath the huge crossed swords of the Victory Arch, to the theme music from 'Star Wars'. In April 1998 Iraq's "volunteer army" paraded for six hours in Baghdad's "Grand Festivities Square," the large outdoor arena marked by the two sets of enormous crossed swords.

Fiigured you would like this.

Happy Birthday Dick

Today is my good friend and brother by companionship Dick's birthday. For those who do not know who he is, well he is my stepfather in-law. Dick and I have a lot in common. The love of music, soccer, drinking a good European beer, and smoking a cigar on New Year Eve. I have had numerous late night talks with Dick about everything from sports to life. He has been there when I needed a friend, and I have been there for him when he needed me. I miss a lot about not being in Holland, but Dick may be one of the biggest things I miss the most. I love him with all my heart and he and Frans (Isabel's Dad) have been and still are two great Opa's (Dutch for grandfather) for my boys. The boys are lucky to have three grandfathers. All different, but all loving men who do right by thier familys. More on Sonny in two days.

Had duty last night, so I was up for 28 hours before I got some sleep. Have duty again tonight.

Again Happy Birthday Dick,

Randy

I Write The Blogs The Whole World Reads.

Today we went to Baghdad and into the Green Zone. The Green Zone is probably the most secure area in all of Baghdad. The ride did not take long and I was driving this time. A break from my gunner job I have been doing as of late. I missed gunning to be honest. Something about being behind that 50 Cal that makes me feel so good. The only thing I can figure it to be is that country in me.

If you have not figured it out, I type like I speak. Most of the times my grammar is not correct or I use the wrong word. For instance there instead of their when I am talking about people. You not what I say, Oh well, it’s my blog. I know it is not a big thing, but it made me laugh several times the past couple of days thinking about the way I write. I say it’s my public school edge-a-macation. Pay the teachers more.

My new roommate seems to be a good guy. MSG L is a retiree recall who is around 56 years old. He is in great shape, matter of fact he smoked me on a run the other day. He spent a couple of tours in Vietnam. I can learn a lot from him and his vast knowledge of Army experience. We also have MAJ S, MAJ K, and SFC C. They seem to be glad to be here and will help take some of the workload off us.

I will holler later,

Randy

My Life's Complete

Genesis 2:23-24
The man said, “This now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

If you have not figured it out yet, today March 19th is Isabel and my anniversary. Seven years we have been married. According to my Nana if a couple can make seven years they stand a pretty good chance of sticking together. Well I can tell you that is what me and my bride plan on doing. Excuse me if I basically talk to Isabel today in this blog.

Sweetheart you and the boys are my world. You made me the happiest man on the face of the earth that Friday morning in Rotterdam when you became my wife. I know there have been some ruff times and we have struggled on more than one occasion, but we continue to strive forward. Two times you have come to me and told me you were pregnant. Both of those two times, I saw nothing but joy in your eyes and heart. You are a great mother to both of Daddy’s little men. The Helms brothers are quite a pair and I owe the majority of it to you. I wish I could be there today with you and do are normal stateside dinner at Red Lobster, but duty calls. Why don’t you dress up them little men and go out to eat. You can give Caelan the money and he can pay for me. I love you baby and I miss you so badly.

Goodbye, Ugh Hello, Who's There

Well my friend Dan left the 0ther night back to the States. Not sure if he will be able to come back. Of course we will miss him and wish him and his family the best. I am sure Sue and the kids will be glad of his return to help them during this difficult time.

Was told yesterday we are getting four new people to our team. They will arrive in the next couple of days. Two Officers and two enlisted. One of the enlisted will bunk down in my room. Hope we get along.

I wonder who all is reading this blog. I know of some of you, but there are a lot I am sure I would be surprised to know of. So here is what I ask. Please post a quick comment with your name. Thanks,

Randy

The Army 2, Randy 0

I have been pulling duty the last two nights. That means I go to our Tactical Operation Cell (TOC) and man the phones and computers. I tracked any Significant Acts (SIGACTS) or Fragmentation Orders (FRAGOS). The duty started about 1900 and finishes around 0700. So for last two days I have been sleeping during the days.

I like working at night. It was my favorite shift to work when I was at the Jail. Remember that. I am coming up on 14 years in the Army. The jail seems so long ago, but my career in the Army seems so short. Weird is it not?

Board results for SFC come out officially on Tuesday of next week. My SGM has already received the list, and I hate to inform you, but I did not make it. Not sure why, but maybe next year. I have to keep my head in the game here, and can not let something like that get me down. When it happens, it happens.

Congrats to my friend Kerry who just finished Drill Sergeant School. Momma you remember her, Brennan’s mother. Kerry, wear that hat and badge with honor. As the Army and Drill Sergeant Motto goes “This We'll Defend” and I am sure you will.

I Have A Crush On You

CPT O told me yesterday he just found out that a lot of the Iraqi Officers have a crush on him. He said this other Army Major (MAJ) who we work with on occasion said all the Iraqi Officers in his (the MAJ) section asked to be introduced to the beautiful man with the green eyes. CPT O said when he was told this it made since to him. About three weeks ago one of the Iraqi Officers told him (CPT O) that he was beautiful with his light skin, not like that other American with dark skin. CPT O said he was pointing at this other Army CPT. I hope they find me ugly to be honest.

On a serious note, please keep my friend Dan, who is my roommate, and his wife Sue in your prayers. Sue is getting ready to have surgery for Cancer. Dan will go home and be with her and help take care of their four kids. Dan is not sure if he will come back or not. I wouldn't. Dan and I have been together since FT Carson. He is a good guy and I wish him and his family an easy time of this or as easy as it can get.

Curse you Jimmy Johnson. What is going on Dale Jr.?

Two Bithday Greetings and a bunch of Iraqis

I have a lot to write about today. I told you in my last blog that we got AFN. Well SFC I has a big TV that he allows us to watch, until we get our Team TV. That TV is on order. Well MSG F had a small little TV that someone gave him when we were training in Ft Carson. Well that small little TV was 110 Voltage. MSG F asked me to plug in and see if it would get AFN as well. So I plugged it into what I thought was a 220 Voltage converter. Well it wasn’t and all of a sudden white smoke started coming out of the TV. It just smoked for about 15 minutes. MSG F was not upset, but he did wonder how someone who has spent almost his whole career overseas could not know the difference with a normal power strip and a converter. We all laughed at my stupidity.

Last night I went on a mission to pickup about 35 to 40 Iraqi soldiers. We flew down, received them, and flew them back. It was like being around a bunch of little kids. They kept standing up inside the helicopter and would not wear their helmets (Kevlars). We handed them earplugs and some of them put it in their mouths and tried to eat it. We had to show them where earplugs go. When got back to Taji we had to account for them all. So we started trying to line them up. Of course they kept moving around and would not stand still. They brought all of their equipment in cardboard boxes. Some of the boxes opened up and stuff was flying all over the airfield. Keep in mind this is 0230 in the morning. One of the boxes was so heavy and big that it took about 35 of them to lift it in to the truck. Funny stuff and I am still laughing about it.

There are five important women in my life. First is Isabel. She is my wife, lover, best friend, and the mother of my two little boys. She keeps things going smooth in my absence. There is Renee Anderson my sister. Renee and I have been through a lot in our lifetime and she means the world to me. Also in the five is Ingrid Lauw, my mother-in-law. Ingrid took me in and has fallen in love with me, or at least I think so. She fed me in Holland when I was hungry, gave me a place to stay when I was in transit back to the states, not just once, but twice and she produced my lovely wife. Then there are two left.

I have written about my grandmother before. Nana is the sweetest lady I know. She still teaches Sunday school, plays piano for the church, and is their when ever someone needs to talk. I love her dearly. And she makes some corn rolls to die for, ask my Uncle Paul.

Last is my momma. I could write everyday on this blog about my momma and never repeat anything. She has always been there for me. When I did things in my youth that I knew was wrong, she never judged me. She just taught me the lesson I needed to learn. I have only argued with my mother once, and to this day I still regret it. I love her more then anything in the entire world. I don’t see her as much, but I think about her daily.

Today is Nana’s and Momma’s Birthday. I ask Grandpa and Sonny to hold them just a little longer and whisper in their ear, “Your Grandson and your Son sends his love.” Happy Birthday Ladies, you’re in my thoughts. I am going to chow now, I wish I could be their for the Sunday meal.

Love ya,
Randy Out.

Armed Forces Network (AFN)

Yesterday was a great day. We have AFN in our building now. What that means is, we have 8 American channels to watch. That is nice for the simple fact we can watch the news, sports, and the most current stateside programming. I have used AFN in Korea, Netherlands, and Belgium so I am used to it.

I have to go to a class on how to get our mail. The guy who normally does it needs some help. So I told him I would give him a hand. By the way the Sergeant First Class list will come out on 21 March. Keep you fingers crossed.

Later,

Randy

The Summer Is Coming

Well the last couple of weeks the temperature is starting to warm up during the day. It has been around 85 to 89. It feels hotter. They tell me it gets about 130 here in Taji during the summer. Not looking forward to that. This morning the wind was blowing something fierce. Sand everywhere. I was wearing sunglasses at 0700 in the morning, just so I could keep the sand out of my eyes.

I played guitar with a guy the other night for about 30 minutes. That was a lot of fun. We exchanges email address and we will try to get together once a week to play. I had to use the MWR guitar, but it really stinks. I wish I had mine, but it costs to much to ship. Oh well. Make due with what you got. Anybody want to buy me an acoustic and ship it? Just kidding.

Isabel sent me some pics of the boys. Caelan is in gym class now. He loves it and wants to go everyday. He only goes once a week, but drives Isabel crazy asking to go everyday. Ryleigh is still fighting some bug, and Caelan as well.

Until next blog,
Randy

Get Out Of The Way, We Have AK 47s

Today I went on the Money Run. That is when we go to Baghdad with the Iraqi Police and a unit of Iraqi Soldiers and pick up money. They picked up somewhere around 10 to 20 million dinars. Of course the Iraqi Police are shooting in the air the whole way down and back at any car who would not get out of the way. I was in the Gunner seat with the 50 Cal Machine Gun watching them. I was thinking to myself bullets that go up most do what? Come down, hum.

While we were waiting outside for them to load the trucks I walked around with a couple of other Sergeants. We stopped at a vendor and bought a kebob (Shorma, Gyro). It was great. I loved it. I have had them before, but my first Iraq one.

Lot of little kids would run up and say hello to us. One of the Sergeants was handing out little teddy bears to them, and then he would ask their parents if he could take a picture with them. I thought that is to cool. Let them kids grow up and they will remember that.

Oh well, for those who are interested I had a nice 37th Birthday yesterday. I did nothing special, but I did get to talk to Isabel and the boys, Mom and Sonny and Renee as well.

Mister, Mister

Not a lot of time to day, but I want to update a little. Yesterday was my first chance to be the gunner. That means I stand up in the hatch with one of the big guns. Our choice yesterday was a M50. Otherwise know as a 50 cal machine gun. Little bit scary up there I will admit. You have to have your head clear and pay attention to your surroundings. I was in full gear and ready to go. Said my prayer, like I always do when we leave, but added a little more this time. All in all we did good. Got where we needed to go and returned to post last night safe and sound. Prayed another prayer saying thanks to my God.

MOMMA DELETE THE NEXT PART BEFORE YOU MAIL TO NANA AND GRANDPA

The other day this little boy came up to my Captain with his friend. He said to my Captain "Mister, Mister," then he pointed to his friend. "Freak Freak" and threw his hands up to his mouth like he was sucking on something. Then he made a funny little noise. His buddy looked embarrassed my Captain said. My Captain said he just laughed until he almost cried. I guess he was saying his Chi boy friend does the do. Oh well wish I would have seen it, I would have laughed like crazy as well.
